I don't know the boy, but if he surprises you and is truly intimidated, he might go into "I don't have to prove anything to you..." mode. In the event that happens, perhaps just telling him that his cousin will be informed he was afraid to race. Boys are usually bad at masking fear.

The ones who are willing to bet something they KNOW could happen are genuinely sure of themselves. "You have to wear a cheerleader uniform" (with shaven legs if he's of an appropriate age) "in front of your friends, in support of your cousin"...If he genuinely believes he could beat her let's see him commit. If he won't commit to a bet, then his confidence may not really be there.

Make sense? (It's fun to see boys get whipped and have to apologize or be humiliated for something that could have been avoided had they just been nicer people.)
